Herpetology Weekend - April
Field trips and programs designed for children and adults. Captive snakes, lizards, turtles, frogs and salamanders on display for examination and photography. Demonstrations include live venomous snakes.

Wildflower Weekend - May
Field trips and evening programs designed for children and adults to view and identify wildflowers in their native habitat. Workshops on woody plants, ferns, mosses, liverworts, edible plants, medicinal plants & plant photography. Beginner to advanced programs. $5 fee.

Like cattle brands of the old west, Kentucky logs were also branded to identify various logging companies active in this area during the 1800's. Learn to recognize the old brands.

Breathitt County Museum
JACKSON - Daniel Boone Country 329 Broadway Street
The Breathitt County Museum is a virtual storehouse of Appalachian history. Exhibits include logging, coal mining, farming home life, education and military. The museum also features an outstanding photograph collection which depicts early life in the Kentucky Mountains. "A non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the rich Appalachian heritage of Breathitt County." Group tours (on request); free to the public; donations welcomed and accepted. Hours: Monday thru Friday 9am-3pm. Directions: Take Hwy 15 to Jackson, turn left on Main Street. Go two blocks past the Washington Avenue intersection and turn left on Broadway.

Breathitt County War Memorial

The Breathitt County War Memorial is located in the courthouse yard. The memorial is dedicated to all Breathitt Countians who have served our country during modern times. Special memorial monuments include those who died during WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. A special wall is included which is made up of veterans bricks. Buckhorn Lake

Beautiful, mountainous terrain in the heart of Kentucky coal country, with a historic log structure near the dam. Buckhorn Lake is located in the Cumberland Plateau of eastern Kentucky and a short drive from the Daniel Boone National Forest and the Red River Gorge Geological Area. The lake was completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1961. Quaint fishing spots dot the scenic lake while unique camping options include cable TV access or boat-in campsites. Natural Bridge Sky Lift Inc.

Don't miss this thrilling ride to the top of Natural Bridge. Open first weeekend of April through last Sunday in October. The Skylift carries passengers to the top of the mountain and with a short flat 600 foot walk to view Kentucky's Natural Bridge. It is a 1/2 mile ride which takes 11 minutes each way.

Pilot Knob State Nature Preserve

Open all year. One of the tallest knobs in the Cumberland Plateau, rising 730 feet above the surrounding area.
